A discovery in the Mississippi River could be a clue in a local missing person case.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, a fisherman noticed something out of the ordinary on his sonar finder while fishing on the river near Sartell, according to a Stearns County Sheriff’s Office release.

The fisherman thought it could be a car and called the sheriff’s office. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol team saw the same thing when it arrived.

The Stearns-Benton County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team searched the river at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, according to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. Divers found a car half full of sediment. Divers believe the car is from the 1960s and is in contact with a local tow company to remove the vehicle.

Stearns County investigators are working with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office to see if the missing car might be related to a missing persons case from Sept. 25, 1967, according to the sheriff’s statement. The Sartell Police Department is also involved in the investigation.
