For many Georgia students, summer vacation is over. But does that mean summer is officially over and fall is here? If so, when will things start to cool down?
The Farmers’ Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac have long been tools for getting long-range forecasts, and they recently released their autumn forecasts. Here’s what we know:
When does fall start?
The start of fall is marked by the fall equinox which is scheduled for 2:19 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22.

Unfortunately, the Old Farmer’s Almanac says you might not want to put away your t-shirts and shorts as a “warmer-than-normal” autumn is predicted. A hot and dry fall is in the forecast for most of the U.S., including Georgia. For the southeast, September will reportedly see average temperatures of 38 (3 degrees above normal) with 4 inches of rain (1 below normal). October will reportedly be more friendly with average temps of 64 (1 below normal) and 1.5 inches of rain (down by half).

Farmers’ Almanac forecasts don’t look much better, predicting the southeast’s fall will have a “warm, dry start” and a “wet, stormy finish.” As for the holidays, thunderstorms threaten Labor Day while Halloween is expected to have clear skies. Thanksgiving’s weather is pretty unclear.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has a similar three-month outlook for September-November. They predict temperatures leaning 33-40% above normal for almost all of Georgia, except a tiny section of the south east leaning 40-50% above normal. As for rain, the right half of the state will see rain leaning 33-40% while the left-half’s rain outlook is unclear.

How does the Old Farmer’s Almanac make predictions?
According to its website, the Old Farmer’s Almanac makes its predictions by comparing solar activity with weather patterns. The almanac says it uses multiple academic disciplines for its predictions, including solar science, climatology and meteorology.
How does Farmers’ Almanac make predictions?
According to the FAQ on its website, Farmers’ Almanac has used “the same formula for over 200 years based on math.”

How accurate are the Farmer’s Almanacs?
Whichever almanac you’re using, they use “secret” formulas that aren’t the most accurate. Reports of their chances vary, but it’s essentially a coin flip. Many experts say forecasts tend to be less accurate if they are 10 days or further out.
