The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over reports of an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday, in Doha, Qatar, which reportedly targeted senior members of the Hamas leadership.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kimiebi Ebienfa on Wednesday, the Federal Government stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and adhering to international law.
“This development raises serious questions about regional stability and the prospects for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the statement said.
The Federal Government also acknowledged Qatar’s longstanding role in promoting dialogue and mediation in the region.
“We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid escalation and recommit to peaceful engagement,” the statement added.
The government extended sympathies to those affected by the incident and reaffirmed its support for initiatives that encourage de-escalation, dialogue, and durable peace.
The ministry further stressed Nigeria’s commitment to collaborating with the international community through the United Nations and other multilateral forums to advance peace, security, and the rule of law in the Middle East and beyond.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified dramatically in October 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostages.
In retaliation, Israel began a prolonged military campaign in Gaza, leading to widespread destruction and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 62,000 people have been killed since the bombing began nearly two years ago.
Qatar has played a central role as a mediator in the conflict. Hamas leaders have long operated from the Qatari capital, which has served as a key base for the group’s political leadership.
