A 20-year-old Georgia woman lost her leg after she was hit by a car while riding her bike alongside her boyfriend in Alpharetta.
On Oct. 30, Chloe Garcia and her boyfriend were on their way to the store when a black Mercedes-AMG suddenly crashed into her around 6 a.m. on New McFarland Road, according to her family.
“At the scene, her left leg was completely severed,” Garcia’s sister, Kiara Ross, shared on GoFundMe. “She lost so much blood that doctors said it’s a miracle she’s even alive today. Our family’s world shattered that morning.”
While Garcia, who remains in the ICU at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, now faces a “long, painful road of surgeries, rehabilitation, and learning how to live with one leg,” her loved ones are demanding answers as to what caused the tragic incident.
According to Ross, the driver who had hit her sister was allegedly not cited nor given a sobriety test. She also added that the family had only received an “incident report” listing the driver’s name and VIN number.
“It feels like her life didn’t matter to the system meant to protect her,” Ross continued of her sister, noting that her medical bills have already surpassed $350,000. “Our family is seeking justice — but right now, we’re also just trying to survive.”
PEOPLE reached out to the Cobb County Police Department for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
In addition to the high medical costs, Ross noted that her sister will need “ongoing care, prosthetics, and therapy for years to come.” As she told WTSP, Garcia already underwent two surgeries and has another one planned.
“I can’t even believe this is real life,” Ross explained to the outlet. “My sister’s only 20 years old, and now she has to go about her life with one leg.”
“She shouldn’t even be here,” she added. “Everyone says she’s a miracle. The fact that she’s still completely herself outside of losing her leg is nothing but God.”
While Cobb County police are continuing to investigate the crash, per WTSP, Garcia’s mother, Shanta Watson, emphasized that the family had been left in the dark following the incident. She claimed that she only learned what kind of vehicle was involved in the incident after hiring a lawyer.
“Somebody has to pay for this. This is not right,” Watson expressed to the outlet. “My daughter was on the sidewalk. She wasn’t even on the street. She hasn’t even seen her 21st birthday. You’ve ruined her life, but yet you walk around like nothing happened.”
