Former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris appeared in public together for the first time since the release of her candid memoir when they greeted each other at former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral.
Cheney, who served as vice president under President George W. Bush, died on Nov. 3 at age 84.
On Thursday, Nov. 20, Biden, former first lady Dr. Jill Biden, and Harris joined other dignitaries, including President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush, at the packed service at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Biden and Harris’ reunion comes nearly two months after the release of Harris’ candid memoir, 107 Days, about her whirlwind 2024 presidential campaign, which began when Biden dropped out of the race in July 2024.
In the book, which was released on Sept. 23, Harris wrote critically about her relationship with Biden officials and his decision to run for reelection.
Biden has not publicly commented on Harris’ memoir, but his aides were reportedly angry about her allegations that he was “reckless” and that his team had worked to undermine her, according to outlets including The New Republic.
One of the first dignitaries to arrive, Harris sat in the front row by herself, chatting with former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Dan Quayle, who were seated behind her. Later, former Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, sat next to Harris.

Just before the start of the service, Biden, whose 83rd birthday fell on the day of the funeral, and Dr. Biden arrived, walking into the cathedral past the front row.
The former president greeted Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, and then former Vice President Al Gore, before heading into the front row.
He followed his wife into the pew, shaking hands with Harris in what appeared to be a polite and reserved exchange.
After sitting down, Dr. Biden and Harris spoke to each other, smiling as they talked.

Notably absent from the funeral were President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who were reportedly not invited.
Trump still hasn’t publicly acknowledged Cheney’s death. On Nov. 4, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said simply that Trump was “aware” of the news, ABC News reported.
At the start of the service, military pallbearers carried Cheney’s U.S. flag-draped casket into the cathedral, followed by his wife, Lynne Cheney, who arrived in a wheelchair, and his daughter, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney.
She was one of 10 Republicans to cross party lines and vote for Trump’s second impeachment after the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, and later lost a bid for reelection after failing to win her primary in 2022.
Dick Cheney supported his daughter in her reelection efforts and had harsh words for Trump, who backed her opponent.
Biden’s Thursday appearance comes amid his ongoing cancer treatment after he disclosed his “aggressive” prostate cancer diagnosis in May. In late October, his daughter, Ashley, shared photos of him ringing the bell at Penn Medicine to celebrate the completion of radiation treatment.
