A former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, on Friday declined to comment on growing calls for his ex-principal, Goodluck Jonathan, to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
PUNCH Online reports that speculations are mounting over the possible return of the former president to the political scene.
Jonathan, who lost his re-election bid in 2015 to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, is being urged by some supporters to throw his hat into the ring once again.
Reacting to the calls during an interview with Channels Television on Friday, Omokri declined to give a definite opinion on Jonathan’s possible return.
“I have unconditional love for Goodluck Jonathan. And so, I would not criticise or give an opinion on anything he does on live television,” he said.
Explaining the depth of his relationship with Jonathan, Omokri, who served as his social media aide, said, “This is a man who came to California and spent 10 days with me and my family.”
On Thursday, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum said the party’s door is open for Jonathan to enter the PDP presidential race.
During an interview on Thursday, Mohammed described Jonathan as one the “most celebrated politicians today,” and believes the ex-president will be a good fit for the party’s ticket.
“But certainly, (former) President Jonathan is one of the candidates we are thinking of, if he joins us and opens his mind to run. And even other people like (former) governor Obi, because if he decides to come to a better platform where there are no encumbrances, he will be given the opportunity too,” Mohammed said.
