Several members of the All Progressives Congress in Dawakin Tofa, the constituency of former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, in Kano State have defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, received the defectors at the Government House in Kano on Friday, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
Speaking at the event, Yusuf described the defections as a clear endorsement of his administration’s programmes and policies over the last two years.
Recalling his 2023 campaign tour across all 44 local government areas, including Dawakin Tofa, the governor said, “I promised to deliver dividends of democracy to every part of Kano State. Dawakin Tofa is a crucial local government in our struggle, and I am the happiest person to witness this massive defection from APC to NNPP.”
The governor listed some of his administration’s projects in Dawakin Tofa, including the completion of a five-kilometre road abandoned by the former administration, and pledged to construct a new school in the constituency.
Yusuf assured the new NNPP members of full integration into the party without discrimination or intimidation and promised more dividends of democracy, adding that a familiarisation tour would be held ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also announced that the Dawanau International Market would be restructured into an agency managed by a board and a Managing Director for better administration.
Commending the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Chairman for generating N500m internally and using the funds to deliver projects, the governor assured that all complaints from the area would be addressed.
The council chairman, in his remarks, highlighted the completion of projects in 15 primary schools and the sponsorship of over 1,000 students in tertiary institutions.
Also speaking, NNPP State Chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa, congratulated the defectors and expressed confidence that Dawakin Tofa would replicate the party’s 2023 election success in Gwale. “God willing, Dawakin Tofa will do even better,” he said.
Those who joined the NNPP include Hon. Nura Tumfafi, Hon. Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, Alhaji Umar Ismail, Alhaji Abba Muntari, Sani Shafiu, Hussaini Adamu, Alhaji Abdullahi Ayuba, Magaji Ruba-Ruba, Sabo Adamu, and Abdullahi Sale Turaki.
