Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered the strict enforcement of traffic regulations across the state, warning motorists to comply with newly installed traffic lights or face sanctions.
This latest move was revealed via a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who said the directive aligns with the state’s renewed push for urban development and public safety.
The statement noted further that the enforcement follows massive government’s investment in road infrastructure, including the installation of traffic lights, streetlights, and road signage, as part of efforts to modernise Kano in line with global urban planning standards.
Despite these investments, the government expressed concern over the growing number of motorists who flout traffic laws and ignore the newly installed infrastructure.
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the Kano Road Traffic Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps to begin full enforcement of all traffic laws, particularly the strict compliance with traffic lights in the metropolis,” the statement said.
The government emphasised that only emergency vehicles – such as fire trucks, ambulances, and security personnel on duty – would be allowed to bypass traffic rules during emergencies.
“All other road users are expected to obey traffic regulations without exception,” it warned.
The governor also issued a stern warning to public officials against interfering with the enforcement process, noting that any attempt to shield traffic offenders would be reported to relevant authorities and treated as sabotage to the administration’s reform efforts.
