The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 14-member committee to spearhead the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic, as part of its drive to expand access to quality tertiary education.

Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during the ceremony on Thursday, said the initiative aligns with the administration’s promise to the people of Gaya.

According to a statement by the Deputy Governor’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the committee is chaired by Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, with Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, as Co-Chairman.

Gwarzo tasked the committee to ensure academic activities commence by the next academic session, noting that the project reflects the government’s commitment to education and socio-economic development.

In his response, Prof. Kurawa pledged the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandate, citing the members’ experience and expertise.

The committee’s responsibilities include facilitating the passage of the Polytechnic Establishment Bill, securing National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) approvals, overseeing construction, recruiting staff, processing admissions, and liaising with stakeholders.

The state government described the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic as a significant step in transforming Kano’s educational sector and creating opportunities for the host community.
