Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has said that his administration inherited empty coffers from the previous administration.
The governor spoke during the official distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers in Kano on Thursday.
He said the situation had been reversed through prudent financial management, with billions of naira now available in government accounts.
This was contained in a statement made available on Saturday by the Director General, Media and Publicity of the State’s Government House, Sanusi Tofa.
The governor accused his predecessor of reckless financial practices, including the engagement of more than 128 tax consultants, who allegedly failed to deliver any tangible results for the state.
Tofa quoted Yusuf as saying that his administration blocked financial leakages and adopted measures to ensure that public funds were used for the welfare of the people, citing the state’s improved performance in the 2025 National Examination Council and WASSCE examinations as evidence of the positive impact of his government’s investment in education in the state.
The statement partly read, ‎“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury to the extent that Kano was left indebted to banks.
‎“We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano’s money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle, and we will not compromise it.
“He pledged that his government would continue to channel resources into education, healthcare, and infrastructure while maintaining transparency and accountability despite opposition criticism.”
