The Kano State Hisbah Board has cancelled the proposed marriage between two popular TikTok users, Idris Maiwushirya and Basira Yarguda, following an investigation that revealed the relationship was a pretentious arrangement staged by the duo to evade legal consequences for their previous actions.
Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the development in a voice recording shared with newsmen on Saturday in Kano.
He said the decision followed findings that the alleged romantic relationship between the two social media personalities lacked sincerity and was not based on mutual understanding.
According to him, the matter was originally referred to the Hisbah Board for formalisation after a Kano Magistrate Court ordered the duo to get married within 60 days.
However, the board’s investigation uncovered that the relationship was merely a tactic to avoid further legal implications.
“After our investigation, we discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual understanding but rather an attempt to evade legal consequences.
“The board, therefore, resolved to cancel the wedding to prevent future conflict,” Dr. Aminuddeen said.
He disclosed further that although both social media personalities had submitted blood samples to confirm their medical compatibility, the process was halted to avoid further complications.
He added that the case would now be returned to court if the matter was not reconciled.
Arewa PUNCH gathered that Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano Magistrate Court had earlier stepped down her ruling on charges of immoral conduct filed by the Kano State Censorship Board against the TikTokers.
The charges stemmed from a controversial video shared on Maiwushirya’s social media page, which the board deemed indecent.
Following their arraignment, both defendants openly confessed in court to being in love and planning to marry before their prosecution. Consequently, Magistrate Wali referred them to the Hisbah Board to facilitate their marriage in accordance with Islamic traditions and gave the board a 60-day notice to perfect the wedding arrangements.
However, the Hisbah Board’s investigation later proved that the relationship was insincere and orchestrated to manipulate the legal process.
Dr. Aminuddeen noted that while the board remains committed to upholding moral and religious standards in Kano State, it would not allow marriage to be used as a shield to evade justice.
Arewa PUNCH also reports that the Nigerian Bar Association recently condemned the court’s directive, compelling the TikTokers to marry, describing it as unconstitutional and an infringement on personal liberty.
In a statement issued by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the NBA maintained that no court in Nigeria possesses the constitutional authority to compel two persons to marry, as doing so violates the rights to dignity, privacy, and personal freedom guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The association further announced that it had set up a monitoring committee through its Citizens’ Liberties Committee and Women’s Forum to ensure the protection of the individuals’ rights and the enforcement of the rule of law.
With the cancellation of the proposed marriage, Arewa PUNCH learnt that the case is expected to return to court for further legal determination.
