The Kano State Government said it is targeting 10 million eligible voters in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk, said this on Friday while inaugurating the State Voter Registration Mobilisation Committee at the Cabinet Office, Kano.
He said the committee was a broad-based body comprising technocrats, Islamic scholars, broadcasters, business leaders and other critical stakeholders, including representatives of opposition political parties.
Faruk explained that the initiative underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible resident of Kano had the opportunity to register and exercise their civic responsibility in future elections.
“The objective of setting up this committee is to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of this exercise.
“Government will provide all the needed support to achieve this target,” he said.
He further directed the committee to intensify voter sensitisation campaigns across all the 44 local government areas of the state, stressing the importance of inclusive participation in strengthening democracy.
On his part, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, said the committee will deliver on its mandate.
“We assure the government and people of the state that we will not betray the trust reposed in us.
“We will also work tirelessly to mobilise residents and achieve the target,” he said.
