KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department released a video of their new blue light car feature on Facebook.
These new car features are intended to increase visibility and deter criminal activity.

Hayden Fowler manages the Pizza Shuttle in the crossroads and says this change may help people feel safe overall but acknowledged some of the hesitance people may feel about extra police presence.
“It’s generally more comforting to be able to spot police from a great distance because a lot of police vehicles are painted in a way that you generally can’t tell if it’s just a dark blue Ford Escape or law enforcement,” Fowler said.
In the video the department posted on Facebook, the blue lights are on the car pictured on the right. They are steady-burning and do not signify an emergency. While the vehicle on the left displays emergency lights, which flash, that officers will continue to use with sirens during emergencies or traffic stops.
Visiting from Chicago, where there are similar criminal incidents, Cathy Patenaude said that she supports the efforts.

“If you can add something else to a police car then you know you’re either safe, they’re nearby or if you need them, they’re there,” Patenaude said. “It’s better.”
It’s important to know that these blue lights do not signify an emergency, so you don’t have to pull over. The only time you have to do so is if you see the flashing red and blue lights, of course with the sirens.
