The Kano State Government has approved two major initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure, power supply, and affordable housing across the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the state announced plans to acquire majority shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company and to construct 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 local government areas outside the metropolis.
The acquisition of a controlling stake in KEDCO, according to the statement, forms part of Governor Abba Yusuf’s broader strategy to strengthen the state’s power sector—covering electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
The government said taking a decisive role in KEDCO’s ownership would enable reforms to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery in an area long plagued by frequent outages and poor infrastructure.
It added that the move is expected to drive industrial growth, create jobs, and attract local and foreign investments, given Kano’s reliance on stable power for economic activities.
The State Executive Council also approved the presentation and adoption of the new Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.
The policy provides a framework for sustainable energy development, integrating renewable sources, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring long-term energy security.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to transforming Kano into an energy-secure and business-friendly state that fosters innovation, industrialisation, and inclusive economic growth,” the statement added.
In a separate development, the state government also approved the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 Local Government Areas outside the Kano metropolis to reduce the housing deficit and expand access to affordable homes.
The initiative, targeted at low- and middle-income earners, is expected to stimulate local economies and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for contractors, engineers, and artisans.
Each estate will include essential infrastructure such as access roads, electricity, and water supply to ensure comfort and sustainability for residents.
“This initiative reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to equitable development and his vision to ensure every part of the state benefits from sustainable infrastructure,” the statement read.
The government reaffirmed its pledge to continue investing in projects that directly improve living standards and strengthen socio-economic growth across Kano State.
