A Madison County elementary school teacher was arrested Oct. 13 after being accused of sexually abusing a student during the 2018-2019 school year.
According to an arrest citation, Charles Hamilton, 40, of Richmond, was charged with sexually abusing a victim under the age of 12. He is currently being held at the Madison County Detention Center.
According to court records, the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services initially received a report of a child who had possibly been sexually assaulted Sept. 8. During a Sept. 17 interview, the girl claimed Hamilton touched her inappropriately over her clothing after she asked him to accompany her to a bathroom during a power outage at Boonesborough Elementary School while she was a student there.
A formal case was opened by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Sept. 23 and a warrant for Hamilton’s arrest was issued Oct. 13.
Hamilton turned himself in without incident, according to a report from WKYT-TV in Lexington.
Madison County Schools Community Education Director Erin Stewart confirmed Hamilton is currently employed by the district as an elementary teacher at Boonesborough Elementary and as a girls’ soccer coach at B. Michael Caudill Middle School, but has been on administrative leave since Sept. 8, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The district will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation,” officials said in a statement.
Hamilton is expected to make his initial court appearance Oct. 20.
