The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced that reconstruction work has officially begun at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In a travel advisory issued on Friday, FAAN urged passengers to arrive at the airport well ahead of their departure time to avoid delays or missed flights due to disruptions caused by the ongoing renovations.

The reconstruction is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade in the aviation sector.

On August 1, the Federal Executive Council approved over N900bn for aviation projects, with the rehabilitation of MMIA’s Terminal One as a central component.

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, had stated that the MMIA project involves stripping the terminal to its structural base and completely rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

The Lagos airport upgrade is expected to cost N712.25 billion, with a projected completion timeline of 22 months.

“To ensure a smooth travel experience, we kindly request that passengers leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey all traffic instructions to aid traffic flow, and park vehicles properly in designated car park areas,” the authority said.

FAAN said that due to limited space, only those travelling should visit the airport during the period of the reconstruction works.

“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” FAAN added.

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos is Nigeria’s busiest airport and a critical hub for both domestic and international travel.
