The Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Adetola Abubakar, has distributed educational materials and financial support to pupils and residents across the LCDA to mark the start of the new academic session.
According to a press statement made available by the LCDA on Saturday, hundreds of pupils benefited from the initiative, which was held at the council secretariat on Thursday, receiving back-to-school items such as exercise books and others.
“Parents and guardians were also provided with financial support to help them meet other school-related expenses,” the statement added.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the council chairperson, Abubakar, said the intervention was part of her administration’s commitment to promoting access to quality education and reducing the financial strain on families.
“We recognise the challenges many parents face at the beginning of every academic year.
“This initiative is to ensure that no child in Agboyi-Ketu is left behind because of a lack of learning materials or financial constraints,” she was quoted as saying.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the council, noting that the gesture would ease their burden and motivate the pupils to perform better in school.
The distribution is the latest in a series of community-focused programmes by the Abubakar administration, which has pledged to prioritise education, youth empowerment, and social welfare across the LCDA.
PUNCH Online on August 21 reported that Abubakar presented 300 free General Certificate Examination forms to school leavers within the council area.
Abubakar, who previously served as Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, emerged as chairman of the council on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
In the last council poll, she was declared the winner after she polled 42,770 votes, defeating her closest rival, Mr Salami Taofeek of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 1,400 votes, while Mr Shoyemi Tolulope of the Labour Party polled 962 votes.
