The Lagos State Government has warned developers against construction on floodplains as part of measures to mitigate against the impact of rising water levels and general climate change effects.

The state Commissioner for Environmental and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said this on Tuesday, while offering advice to residents of the state on X.

According to him, while the weather cannot be controlled, people must take responsibility for managing their environment.

“Responsible environmental practices, such as proper waste disposal and avoiding construction in flood plains, are crucial steps in this fight.

“This is the pivot of our messages; that we understand the challenges of flooding and work together to mitigate it as we continue building resilience infrastructures for the future,” he said.

In a bid to tackle the challenge of flooding, the state government recently installed a pumping station in the Lagos Island area of the state.

The device is useful for pumping out excessive surface water from the land and channelling it into the lagoon, a technique expected to limit the overflow of water into houses.
