The Lagos Waste Management Authority has sealed Sabo Market for persistent non-compliance with environmental regulations.
In a post on its official X handle on Thursday, LAWMA said the enforcement followed several months of warnings and engagement with traders at the market.
The authority noted that despite repeated notices and sensitisation efforts, traders continued to dump refuse indiscriminately, obstructing roads and violating sanitation rules.
โAfter months of warnings and engagement, Sabo Market has been sealed for non-compliance. Traders repeatedly dumped waste on the road and ignored payment notices for proper waste evacuation. Letโs all play our part to keep Lagos clean,โ the agency wrote.
The latest enforcement action is part of LAWMAโs ongoing campaign to promote environmental hygiene and ensure compliance with waste management laws across markets in the state.
In recent months, several markets and public toilets have been sealed over similar offences. Earlier this year, PUNCH Online reported that the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office shut down public toilets at Katangua Market and those located inside Ile-Epo, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, for discharging untreated wastewater and sewage into public drains, exposing residents to health risks.
Also in January, the state government sealed Oke-Afa Market in Isolo and Katangua Market in Abule Egba for โgrave environmental infractionsโ, including indiscriminate dumping of refuse and unsanitary conditions within market premises.
The series of enforcement actions underlines the stateโs zero-tolerance stance on environmental pollution.
