A lifeboat broke off a Carnival Cruise Line ship while it was docked in Mexico yesterday, the company has confirmed.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time while the Carnival Dream was docked in Cozumel, Mexico, on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Witnesses on a neighboring ship reportedly saw the emergency vessel break apart and fall off the ship’s starboard side. Luckily the Dream was docked on its port side, so the small vessel fell into the water.

Jennifer Landers, who was cruising on the Princess Regal, which was also docked in Cozumel at the time of the incident, shared photos of the event with PEOPLE.
The pictures show significant structural damage to the lifeboat’s exterior. The front half of the boat’s orange top appears ripped off while the rear portion largely seems intact. Additional photos show a piece of the vessel’s bow still attached to one of the Dream’s cables. Landers later captured the moment cleanup crews retrieved the snapped off segment.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Carnival Cruise Line stated the incident occurred while crews were performing an “unmanned test.”
“The team on Carnival Dream was conducting an unmanned test of lowering one of the lifeboats when a latch got caught on one of the cables, resulting in the vessel hanging from one end then falling into the water below,” a spokesperson said. “No one was injured.”

According to Carnival’s website, the company’s lifeboats are “tested during regularly scheduled drills to make certain that they are in proper working order.”
Although the vessel lost one of its lifeboats, the company says they “ensure that the number of lifejackets, lifeboats and life rafts on each Carnival ship exceed the number required, based on the ship’s maximum capacity for passengers and crew.”
According to CruiseMapper, the incident occurred during Carnival Dream’s six day, round-trip sailing of the Western Caribbean. The site reports the ship departed Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, Nov. 15. The vessel is set to return on Nov. 21.

This is not the first time a lifeboat seemingly detached from a cruise ship. It reportedly happened back in December 2022 on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas.
In a video shared to social media, a lifeboat appears to drop during a crew training or tendering operation on Dec. 1. The clip shows the boat hitting the deck of the cruise ship before it fell completely into the water. Crews reportedly retrieved the ship, with large dents and cracks.
