At a time when it seems so many stores are closing or declaring bankruptcy, there are some that are bucking the trend.
Or should we say writing a new chapter?
Bookseller Barnes & Noble expects to open more than 60 new locations across the United States and Florida in 2025.
Thirty-two have already opened and another 31 are expected to open before the end of December, with Barnes & Noble saying there’s “lots more to come in 2026!”

According to the bookseller, additional stores will open before the end of the year in the following states:
Some states will have more than one location, are some are “relocations” of previously closed stores. Exact locations of all new stores opening before the end of the year have not been announced.

Port St. Lucie: A Barnes & Noble bookstore will open at 1745 St. Lucie West Blvd. in Town Center at St. Lucie West, where Party City used to be. The store is targeted to open by November, but the date is subject to change, according to Barnes & Noble spokesperson Janine Flanigan to TCPalm earlier this year.

‘Exciting time’ for Barnes & Noble
“It’s an exciting time for us,” Barnes & Noble said in a statement.
“Sales in the new stores with their new design and format are exceeding our forecasts, people are lining up around the block for openings and with a strong Fall publishing we expect a great Holiday season.”
CEO James Daunt took over in 2018 and changed its business model.
“Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful,” the bookseller said in a February news release.
“In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019.”

Data company ScrapeHero said there are 683 Barnes & Noble stores in the U.S. as of Aug. 5, up from 659 in March. States with the most bookstores are:
