Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In Seattle’s closely watched mayoral race, the Democratic incumbent, Bruce Harrell, conceded defeat last week, clearing the way for Mayor-elect Katie Wilson, a self-described Democratic socialist, who’ll take the oath of office in January.
* Despite the lopsided results of the Proposition 50 vote in California, Donald Trump’s Justice Department has filed suit against California’s redistricting plan, condemning the move as a “power grab.” The DOJ raised no comparable concerns about Republican-led redistricting schemes in Texas, Missouri and North Carolina.
* Speaking of the Golden State, Rep. Eric Swalwell is reportedly poised to launch a Democratic gubernatorial campaign in California. The news comes on the heels of Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla announcing that he would not run for governor.
* In New Jersey, where Rep. Mikie Sherrill easily won her gubernatorial campaign two weeks ago, the Democratic congresswoman will formally resign from Congress this week. A special election to fill the U.S. House vacancy will be held in the new year.
* In case there were any doubts about Gov. Ned Lamont’s future plans, the Connecticut Democrat announced last week that he’ll seek a third term in 2026. The incumbent governor is likely to face a primary challenge from state Rep. Josh Elliott.
* In Georgia, Republican Rep. Mike Collins’ Senate campaign last week launched an AI-generated attack ad targeting Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, which appears likely to become a serious issue in races nationwide in the 2026 cycle.
* Republican Rep. Byron Donalds appears to be the front-runner for the GOP nomination in Florida’s gubernatorial race, but he won’t run unopposed: James Fishback, a CEO for an investment firm, is throwing his hat into the ring, too.
