Today’s edition of quick hits.

* More canceled flights: “The major airlines were expected to cancel 6% of their flights at 40 high-traffic airports Tuesday to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration mandate, despite the Senate passing a preliminary agreement to end the government shutdown.”

* In the Middle East: “Some Trump administration officials are deeply concerned that the Gaza peace deal between Israel and Hamas could break down because of the difficulty implementing many of its core provisions, as private documents obtained by Politico and circulating among U.S. officials underscore the lack of a clear path forward.”

* A deadly attack in Pakistan: “At least 12 people were killed and 27 others wounded on Tuesday in an attack on Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, according to officials. It was the first major attack to hit the city in more than a decade and comes as Pakistan is facing a resurgence of assaults by several insurgencies.”

* Meanwhile, in India: “The deadly car explosion that killed at least eight people in India’s capital is being investigated as a possible terrorist attack, law enforcement officials said Tuesday, raising concerns it could escalate tensions in the region.”

* In the recent past, this would’ve been tough to predict: “President Donald Trump hosted Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, welcoming the once-pariah state into a U.S.-led global coalition to fight the Islamic State group. Al-Sharaa arrived at the White House around 11:30 a.m. for his Oval Office meeting, which was closed to the press.”

* I know plenty of pasta lovers who won’t be pleased: “Your pasta could get a lot pricier under new tariffs targeting Italian imports — if you can find them at all. Starting as early as January, U.S. tariff rates on imported pasta from 13 major Italian companies could soar to as high as 107% under a preliminary U.S. Commerce Department decision. For consumers in the United States, this means the cost of Italian pasta could more than double if the brands decide to pass tariff costs on to retail buyers.”

* Trump’s one last effort in the Carroll case: “While the Supreme Court considers the Trump administration’s bids to halt food stamp funding and deploy troops in Chicago, the president’s personal lawyers are asking the justices to reverse one of the civil verdicts won by E. Jean Carroll, the writer he was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming.”

See you tomorrow.
