A drone video has captured what may be a 12-foot Great White Shark near popular beaches in Maine.

The Scarborough, ME, police department wrote in an Aug. 12 press release that it wanted to “inform the public of a potential shark sighting in local waters, specifically in the area off the south tip of Richmond Island, Crescent Beach State park, Higgins Beach and Pine Point Beach.”

The police department followed that post by releasing drone footage.

Police wrote that they were releasing the notice “for public situational awareness.”

On Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, Scarborough’s Marine Resource officer “received a report of what appeared to be a large shark near Richmond Island and Scarborough Beach.”

“Follow-up observations were conducted and on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, the Marine Resource Officer obtained drone video footage showing a possible Great White Shark, estimated to be 10-12 feet in length, off the southern end of Richmond Island in the vicinity of Higgins beach and Scarborough Beach,” police wrote.

Police wrote that they were sharing the information “promptly to keep the community informed. As additional details become available, we will provide updates.”

On Aug. 12, police shared the drone video.

“Please see the attached drone footage taken on Monday, August 11, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m. Photo credit goes to David Lancaster, who captured the footage from his watercraft,” they wrote.

“The shark was spotted again this morning in the area off Pine Point Beach. No photo or video has been obtained yet from this second sighting,” police noted.

A man wrote in the police comment thread on Facebook, “Yes was fishing by Higgins and can confirm there was a massive shark jumping out the water and feeding.”

“We saw the same thing on Scarborough Beach!” a woman responded.

“Saw the same at Scarborough Beach,” another person wrote.
