Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said the growing animosity between her and President Donald Trump “has all come down to the Epstein files.”
“I believe the country deserves transparency in these files, and I don’t believe that rich, powerful people should be protected if they have done anything wrong,” the Georgia Republican told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday’s “State of the Union.”
“I have no idea what’s in the files. I can’t even guess,” Greene added. “But that is the question everyone is asking is why fight this so hard?”
Greene, a former close ally of Trump, has come under fire from the president in recent weeks over her push to release federal files related to Jeffrey Epstein files, a trove of documents presumably detailing the disgraced financier’s crimes, including who may have known about or been involved in those crimes.
Following the release of thousands of documents detailing emails between Epstein and others — some of which appeared to implicate Trump — the House is expected to vote Tuesday on legislation that would force the release of the federal files.
Trump on Friday called Greene a “ranting lunatic” and said he was withdrawing his support for her. On Saturday, he called her a traitor.
Greene on Sunday vehemently denied being a traitor and called Trump’s comments “hurtful.”
“Those are the types of words that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger,” Greene said.
Greene revealed on social media that she had been contacted by multiple private security firms after “a hot bed of threats” were made against her and egged on by “the most powerful man in the world.”
Her words didn’t sit well with at least one other close ally of the president. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer on Saturday accused Greene of lying.
“You’re a millionaire, bitch. Go hire security if you’re so afraid of President Trump,” Loomer posted on X. “You look pathetic accusing Trump of inciting violence against you. He never did such a thing. You are a compulsive liar and a fraud. Enjoy your new radical left friends. Full time victim.”
Bash on Sunday pointed out Greene has remained silent in other instances where Trump has gone after political opponents. Greene said Bash’s words were “fair criticism.”
“I would like to say humbly, I’m sorry for taking part in the toxic politics,” Greene said. “It’s very bad for our country.”
