CHICAGO — Services honoring former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar are set to take place on Saturday morning.
Edgar, a two-term Republican who served as Illinois’ 38th governor from 1991 to 1999, died Sunday at age 79.

Edgar was known as a steady hand in the state’s politics and was credited with guiding the state into a period of greater financial stability in the 1990s. He was also the last Republican governor elected more than once in Illinois.
In a statement, Edgar’s family said the former governor died from complications related to treatment for pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he publicly disclosed earlier this year.
Edgar is survived by his wife and two children.
Prior to Saturday’s service, Edgar lay in state in the Rotunda of the Illinois State Capitol Building, where visitors had the opportunity to pay their last respects.

Saturday’s services are set to take place at Central Baptist Church in Springfield, starting at 11 a.m.
