NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — ‘Tis the season of change, for the weather and wildlife! Mid-September is when Tennessee sees the greatest number of birds migrating through.
According to BirdCast, a website that uses weather radar to forecast bird migration, on the night of September 10th, more than 300 million birds are expected to migrate over the United States.
According to avian biologist Jenna Atma, some birds wait until there is a northerly wind to fly south. She said the tailwind can help them conserve a lot of energy.
September is when tornadoes are rarest in Tennessee. Here’s why
Atma, who works at Warner Parks Nature Center, said that along with the birds that are here year-round, she is starting to see migratory birds stop by and refuel.
“There’s been a lot of thrushes that are migrating through right now, and there are also a lot of warblers coming through. I was just looking around yesterday for a little bit and found some Magnolia Warblers, and Black and White Warblers,” Atma told News 2.
She said this time of year is also when there are a lot more Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the park.
