The claim that a Minnesota man threw his wife a “death party” in her final hours and was later arrested and sentenced to three years in prison was true.
The man in question was Duane Arden Johnson, who told officials “he had a ‘death party’ for his wife, Debora, because that’s what she requested,” according to the criminal complaint against him filed in Brown County on March 11, 2019. (The complaint misspelled the name of Johnson’s wife, Debra, in this sentence.) Snopes obtained the criminal complaint and sentencing order for the case from the Minnesota court system.

The report described the charge on which Johnson was eventually convicted, criminal neglect, as:
On or about January 24, 2019, in Brown County, the Defendant, Duane Arden Johnson, was a caregiver of a vulnerable adult and deprived the vulnerable adult of necessary food, clothing, shelter, health care or supervision, when the Defendant was reasonably able to make the necessary provisions and the Defendant’s conduct resulted in great bodily harm to the vulnerable adult.
The detailed report also said the so-called death party “consisted of [Johnson] playing rock music, especially their favorite song by Quiot Riot [sic] ‘Metal Health’ really loud while holding her in their bed in the event she happened to shake or convulse.”
According to the same document, Johnson “reported that Debra had wanted him to have sex with her before she died so he accommodated that request.” Johnson also admitted they both smoked methamphetamine and claimed his wife “wanted to ‘party’ before her death.”
The deceased, who had been suffering from a multitude of health issues, was ultimately “prescribed antipsychotic medication” and eventually placed in Meeker Manor Rehabilitation Center, “a home-like facility located just off the shores of Lake Ripley in Litchfield, Minnesota,” in September 2018, but her husband removed her from care.
Debra Johnson was found on Jan. 24, 2019, after police received a call about a deceased person at Johnson’s address. Duane Johnson maintained that “he didn’t assist his wife in her death and that he only wanted her to be comfortable.”
Johnson eventually pleaded guilty to a felony charge of criminal neglect and was sentenced to 36 months at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud with credit for 201 days already served, according to the sentencing order signed by Judge Robert A. Docherty on Aug. 12, 2019. Searches of the Minnesota Department of Corrections website did not show Johnson as a current inmate as of this writing, and Snopes could not find further information on his current whereabouts.

Other charges against Johnson included murder in the third degree and receiving stolen property — law enforcement found a multitude of stolen firearms at the residence — but were dismissed.
According to court documents, Debra Johnson’s cause of death was listed as methamphetamine toxicity.
Johnson’s case was widely covered in the national media at the time, including by The Associated Press, CBS News and The Washington Post.
