JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi House lawmakers are considering giving voters the option to vote early in order to boost turnout at the polls.
“I think just expanding the time span where people can vote. One day may not work for some people,” said Sonya Williams Barnes, state policy director for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
Samantha Buckley, director of policy at the Secure Democracy Foundation, told the House Select Committee on Voting Rights that early voting mimics most election day practices. Voters cast their ballots at the local clerk’s office and put the ballot into the machine.
“This equipment has been checked. It’s gone through its L&A testing, but it is not counted. It sits in the voter machine, voting machine that is going to be locked and secured until election day,” said Buckley.
Mississippi is one of three states that doesn’t allow early voting.
