JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins has approved a referendum petition that could overturn new redistricting laws passed earlier this year.
That means the group behind the petition can now start collecting signatures from voters to get the issue on the November 2026 ballot.
Basically, a referendum lets voters decide whether to keep or reject a law that’s already been passed by the state. If they can get enough signatures (at least 5% of registered voters in six of Missouri’s eight congressional districts) it will go before voters statewide.

Hoskins says the approval makes sure the process stays fair.
“Every Missourian deserves confidence that ballot measures follow the law — not out-of-state agendas or confusion campaigns. Missouri values fairness and integrity, and this process reflects that.” he said.
He also reminded Missourians that no signatures collected before the official approval date will actually count.
