WETHERSFIELD – A mother wanted in connection with her 2-year-old daughter’s death in North Carolina last year was apprehended in Connecticut on Monday, officials say.
In a news conference on Tuesday, Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said a grand jury has indicted 28-year-old Rajasaffiyya Drain on murder and felony child abuse in relation to her daughter, Jamie Drain.
Rajasaffiyya Drain was captured Monday in Wethersfield where police said they responded to a domestic-related incident around 6:20 p.m. Drain was taken into custody at the scene and charged as a fugitive from justice.
Ruffin said Drain has family in Wethersfield and was likely staying with them before she was taken into custody.
Drain was arraigned Tuesday in state Superior Court in New Britain where a judge doubled her bond to $2 million.
She was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, violation of a protective order, disorderly conduct, interfering with police and third-degree assault in connection with the Wethersfield arrest.
Her daughter’s homicide occurred on Dec. 2, 2024 when Ruffin said first responders were called to a residence on Jack Branch Road in Windsor, N.C., for reports of an unresponsive young child. Ruffin said the child, identified as Jamie Drain, was pronounced dead at a hospital and given CPR at the scene.
Rajasaffiyya Drain was the only adult at the residence when the incident occurred and reported her daughter had fallen and began shaking before she was found on the floor unresponsive, Ruffin said. Rajasaffiyya Drain claimed she was cooking at the time of the incident, Ruffin said, and gave Jamie water, but the little girl would not respond.
Ruffin said Rajasaffiyya Drain also claimed Jamie had fallen down the stairs several days before she died. Ruffin said the evidence collected shows the 2-year-old died of blunt-force trauma and injuries to her head. He said medical experts notified authorities the injuries the child sustained had to have been inflicted by an adult.
Dec 2. She waived extradition and next court date is Oct. 23. She is being held on 2 million bond.
