An unfortunate tragedy unfolded in New Jersey this past weekend. Toraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Reid was fatally shot on Saturday morning (Sept. 6). Court documents revealed that police were called to the scene around 11 a.m. and found her “laying near the exit” of the Paragon Apartment Complex in Jackson Township, N.J.; Reid was unresponsive and had multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect, 29-year-old Shaquille Green, was spotted fleeing the scene of the crime on foot. The authorities later caught him as he ran on North Prospect Road and took him into custody. Green was charged with murder and multiple weapons violations. “A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, identified Green – who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid – as the individual responsible for her death,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Jakahya, the sister of Toraya and Naz Reid, took to social media to address the tragic situation. She called Green a “coward” and wished that his family never had to “experience this type of pain.” She also demanded that people acknowledge her late sister as more than just the sibling of an NBA player. “My sister has a name,” Jakahya wrote. “She is not just some girl, She’s not just the [NBA superstar] sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her (expletive) or don’t mention her at all.”
Their mother, Anashia Reid, and many other family members and friends also expressed their grief over Toraya’s untimely death. It is especially difficult considering what the Timberwolves hooper said about his siblings a few years ago.
“My older sister is super protective,” he told MSP Magazine in 2023 when reflecting on being the middle child. “She treats us like she’s our parent.”
VIBE sends its sincerest condolences to the Reid family, their friends, and loved ones.
