Looking to spruce up your yard with some greenery? New Castle County is giving away free trees to Delawareans.
Here’s how you can get yours.
Tree For Every Delawarean Initiative
Magnolia trees bloom across a stream running through Valley Garden Park in Greenville.
New Castle County is partnering with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service to support the Tree for Every Delaware Initiative. The initiative aims to address critical climate change needs by giving away free native trees to residents to help existing ecosystems thrive and bolster tree canopy across the state.
TEDI is part of Delaware’s comprehensive Climate Action Plan to respond to climate change, which includes strategies to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, which drive the climate change we see today, and maximize resilience to climate change impacts. Trees preserve soil, improve air and water quality, support wildlife, reduce stormwater runoff and provide shade, which can lower energy costs and make neighborhoods more comfortable in the summer. They also play a critical role in helping to fight climate change.

This is the third year the New Castle County Department of Public Works has partnered with DNREC and Delaware Forest Service. So far, the county has helped distribute more than 850 trees. This year’s goal is to distribute 200 trees across two events, which chips away at TEDI’s goal of planting 1 million trees by 2030.
