After a string of four car break-ins in October alone, residents at the Towne Estates complex in Wilmington, Delaware, are fed up.
They shared video of a thief on a bicycle approaching cars and breaking windows before stealing items inside and riding away.
For those who live at the complex, this nightmare keeps repeating itself.
“They broke in my window once, then four times within that week. They broke into my car and ransacked it,” says Ayesha Edwards.
Edwards told Action News she had to replace her car window and her neighbors have been targeted as well. Edwards has resorted to proving that her car is empty.
“I leave my glove box open and my armrest panel up as well, there’s nothing,” she said.
The frustration builds as each incident is reported, but the pattern repeats.
Wilmington police say there have been four reports filed at this location so far this month.
“They’re still coming back because nothing is being done,” said Edwards.
New Castle County police say they made three arrests in a similar case in North Wilmington early Monday morning.
“They were able to link them to four separate attempted vehicle thefts. They were all charged,” said Sgt. Michael McNasby. “They’re 17, 18 and 19 years old. It’s 4 o’clock in the morning, really no business for these guys to be out there.”
New Castle County police say that when the weather turns colder, people resort to using the automatic start or starting their cars in their driveways.
That is when police often see an uptick in motor vehicle thefts as well.
