Netherlands Did NOT Officially Label Antifa A Terrorist Group On September 18, 2025 — Parliament Made Request To Government

Did the Dutch government officially label Antifa as a terrorist organization on September 18, 2025? No, that’s not true: The Dutch parliament only passed a motion requesting that the government do that. Motions are parliamentary talking points and do not oblige the Dutch government to do anything, so it may or may not still happen in the future.

Posts on social media, such as this one on X (archived here) published on September 19, 2025 mistook the news about the motion for an official declaration from the country. That one read:

ANTIFA: Following Trump’s lead, the Netherlands has officially labeled Antifa a terrorist group.

According to the website of the Dutch Parliament (“Tweede Kamer”, literally “Second Chamber”) on September 18, 2025 a motion (archived here) was indeed passed by hand-raising with 76 votes out of 150 titled “Motie van het lid De Vos c.s. over Antifa ook in Nederland als terroristische organisatie aanmerken”. Translated, that means “Motion of member De Vos c.s. about labeling Antifa as a terrorist organisation in the Netherlands too”.

The full text of the motion (archived here) read:

De Kamer,

gehoord de beraadslaging,

constaterende dat de Verenigde Staten zojuist hebben besloten om antifa als terroristische organisatie aan te merken;

overwegende dat ook in ons land antifacellen actief zijn die politici bedreigen, bijeenkomsten verstoren, studenten en journalisten intimideren en er niet voor terugdeinzen om geweld te gebruiken;

verzoekt de regering om antifa ook in Nederland als terroristische organisatie aan te merken,

en gaat over tot de orde van de dag.

De Vos
Wilders
Van der Plas

Translated that reads:

The Chamber,

having listened to the debate,

noting the United States just decided to label antifa as a terrorist organization;

noting that in our country antifacells are active as well that threaten politicians, disrupt meetings, intimidate students and journalists and don’t hesitate to use violence;

requests that the government label antifa as a terrorist organization in the Netherlands as well,

and continues with the order of the day.

De Vos
Wilders
Van der Plas

A Dutch government website listing the tasks and duties of the Parliament (archived here) has this to say about motions:

Recht om moties in te dienen

De Kamer mag een discussiepunt indienen, een motie. Dit betekent een uitspraak doen over een bepaald onderwerp. Het kabinet is niet verplicht een motie uit te voeren.

Translated:

The right to submit motions

The Chamber can enter a point of discussion, a motion. This means making a statement about a certain topic. The cabinet is not obligated to execute a motion.

Two of the three members of parliament that submitted the motion (Wilders and Van der Plas) belong to two of the four parties that originally made up the current cabinet, which is in resignation. The third submitter (De Vos) is part of an opposition party. It is unclear if the government will take any action but it hasn’t so far, at the time of writing.
