After a years-long war over who is allowed to live in New York City, the rats have won – or at least dethroned the czar.

The city’s famed “rat czar”, Kathleen Corradi, who was appointed by the New York mayor, Eric Adams, in 2023, has resigned, effective 10 October.

“When I appointed Kathy Corradi to this historic, unique job, I knew she’d have the drive and knowledge to send the rats packing from our city,” Adams said in a statement. “It’s a daunting, complex task, but she’s handled it with confidence and creativity.”

Adams vowed that the effort to eliminate the city’s rodent problem would “continue at full steam”.

Corradi will continue to work for the city in a different capacity, which the city has not disclosed.

When Corradi took the job, she said that New Yorkers would see “a lot of me and a lot less rats”.

An estimated 3 million rats live in the five boroughs. The city awarded Corradi $3.5m to increase public awareness about rat mitigation.

Corradi’s effort included birth control for rats. She appeared to be progressing in making the rodents feel less welcome. In January, calls to 311, the city’s government services line, decreased by 24% over the same period a year earlier, the New York Times reported.

In fiscal year 2025, the city also responded to 79% of rodent complaints within 14 days, a 14% improvement in timeliness compared to the previous year, according to a report from the mayor’s office.
