Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a terrorist commander, identified as Amirul Fiya, also known as Abu Nazir, along with his foot soldiers, during a repelled attack in Balge Local Government Area of Borno State.

A statement on Sunday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt Col Appolonia Anele, said an AK-47 rifle, unexploded ordnance, two rocket-propelled grenades, and other items were recovered during the operation.

She said, “The Nigerian Army has recorded significant operational successes across the country, neutralising a notorious terrorist commander, arresting criminal suspects, and recovering assorted weapons in its ongoing operations.

“On 7 August 2025, troops of 3 Battalion deployed at Forward Operating Base Rann Kala in Balge Local Government Area of Borno State repelled an attack by ISWAP/JAS terrorists.

“During exploitation at first light, troops discovered the corpses of three terrorists, including their top commander, identified as Amirul Fiya (aka Abu Nazir).

“Blood trails at the scene indicated that other terrorists escaped with injuries. The operation led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, an unexploded ordnance, two rocket-propelled grenades, and other items.”

In a follow-up operation on 9 August, she said, troops, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force/Hybrid Force, discovered another terrorist corpse.

“A QJC 88-barrel gun, an AA gun tripod, 20 rounds of 12.7 x 108mm ammunition, a backpack, and a bicycle were recovered,” she added.

Anele further noted that in Zamfara State, on 8 August 2025, troops of 1 Brigade Combat Team 2 responded to credible intelligence on terrorist activities along Road Gusau–Kaura Namoda in Unguwar Sariki Musulmi, Kaura Namoda LGA.

She added that the swift response forced the terrorists to flee, leading to the rescue of two kidnapped victims who have since been reunited with their families.

“In Ebonyi State on 9 August, troops of 24 Special Engineer Regiment responded to a communal clash between Iyimagwu and Ekpomaka communities in Ikwo LGA.

“They came under fire from an abandoned building, returned fire, and killed one armed suspect.

“Recovered items included a G3 rifle, 50 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, 16 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and four hand grenades,” the statement added.

Anele said the army would continue coordinated operations with other security agencies to maintain peace and security nationwide.
