The Nigerian Army has committed to fostering a stronger and more transparent relationship with the media, declaring that brutality has no place in its dealings with civilians.
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechukwu Anele, pledged on Friday during a media parley at the Nigerian Army Officers’ Mess, Onikan, Lagos.
Anele described journalists as “critical partners” in shaping public understanding of the military’s role, stressing that open communication is vital in countering misinformation and building public trust.
“There are times we have altercations with the larger society; we are Nigerians, and things do happen,” she said. “We admonish our men as much as possible and make them realise that it is their tax that pays our salary.
“We are here to serve you, to defend you, not to pick up arms, brutalise, or go against the general public.
“So please, help us to tell our story.”
She criticised the perception of the Army as unresponsive to media inquiries, vowing to end the “all efforts to reach the DAPR proved abortive” narrative by ensuring prompt access to information.
Anele assured that under her watch, the Directorate’s doors would remain open to journalists seeking accurate and timely updates on Army activities.
She also thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for entrusting her with what she described as a “historic appointment.”
