No Same-Day Voting, New Police Funding Plans

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expanded the agenda for the state’s second special legislative session, adding measures to ban same-day voter registration and restructure law enforcement funding.

The announcement published in an August 25 press release from Abbott’s office comes as lawmakers continue tackling priorities from the original session agenda.

Abbott’s additions include “legislation to prohibit same day voter registration in Texas” and provisions “authorizing contracts with sheriffs and constables for the provision of law enforcement services.” The governor also seeks legislation addressing “the appropriation or transfer of funds to or from a law enforcement agency.”

The expansion signals Abbott’s continued focus on election security and public safety measures. Same-day voter registration, currently allowed in 22 states, permits eligible citizens to register and vote on Election Day.

The law enforcement funding measures would provide new mechanisms for contracting police services between jurisdictions. Such arrangements could allow smaller communities to share resources with larger departments.

Abbott did not specify when lawmakers must address these new items. The special session continues with no announced end date.
