A North Dakota man allegedly drowned in a northern Minnesota lake on Aug. 9, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

The sheriff’s office received reports shortly before 6 p.m. of a person who allegedly went in the water while boating on Cass Lake and hadn’t resurfaced, prompting multiple agencies to respond and begin searching the area.

An investigation determined the man, a 41-year-old from Grafton, North Dakota, allegedly exited a pontoon to work on an issue with the boat’s motor and didn’t resurface, the sheriff’s office said. While juveniles supposedly tried to throw the man a life jacket, the boat began to drift in high winds before it was intercepted by other boaters on the lake.

The man’s body was recovered from the water shortly before 8 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. According to the sheriff’s office, he wasn’t wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. The man’s identity is being withheld as authorities notify family members.
