The National Youth Service Corps has lamented what it described as dilapidated conditions of facilities at the Akwa Ibom State Orientation Camp.
The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Samuel Pepple, urged the governor to see to the rehabilitation of buildings in the camp, saying many of them were with leaking roofs.
Speaking during the 2025 Batch C Orientation exercise on Friday, Pepple said, “Let me at this juncture thank the Governor of Akwa Ibom State for standing by us and for the promise of rebuilding this orientation camp.
“Let me also at this juncture appeal to his excellency to please fast track the promise because even as they are here in this camp, old dilapidated building are all licking and we have Nigerians from all nooks and crannies. Please, your excellency, we need you on this emergency programme.”
The coordinator called on the corps members to obey camp rules and participate in all programs, noting that the programs are specifically designed to make them become problems solvers in the society.
The Akwa Ibom State governor had earlier in the year announced an increase of N20, 000 to all corps members serving in the state, and extended the gesture to all Akwa Ibom corps members serving in other states of the federation.
He similarly approved the reconstruction of the Orientation camp to state-of-the-art facilities
In his remarks, the state governor, Umo Eno, assured NYSC and corps members that work would soon commence on the rehabilitation of infrastructure in the camp.
Eno, who was represented by the Director of Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Youth Development, Anthony Isonguyoh, said the state had started the payment of N20, 000 monthly stipends as state allowance for corps members serving in the state.
“I am aware of the current state of infrastructure at your orientation camp. As a responsive government, we have graciously approved the comprehensive rebuilding of this entire camp for the comfort and productivity. Work will commence very shortly,” Eno said.
He urged the corps members to have a healthy attitude to work and open their hearts to learning new things, embrace innovations and changes as they interact with people.
