Lawmakers and officials are paying tribute to an Ohio police officer who died in a car crash on the morning of Monday, Nov. 11.
Canton Police Officer Dave Wolgamott “was on his way to serve his community – a duty he faithfully performed for nearly two decades in Canton – when his life was tragically cut short,” Attorney General Dave Yost wrote in a statement.
“My deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire Canton Police Department,” he added.
The crash took place just before 7 a.m. the Canton Police Department told local outlets WOIO-TV, WBKN-TV and Spectrum 1 News. He was then transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Additional details about the collision were not immediately released, with police telling Spectrum 1 News that no other details would be released at this time out of respect for Wolgamott’s family.
The incident remains under investigation.
“It is a very sad day for all of us at Canton PD. Dave will be sorely missed,” Lt. Dennis Garren told Spectrum 1 News.
Wolgamott had been an officer with the Canton Police Department for 19 years and was assigned to the patrol division where he worked in the jail, the outlets reported.
According to his obituary, he also served in the U.S. Army and served in Bosnia and stayed in the Army National Guard for years afterward before becoming a police officer.
“He spent his free time hunting, fishing, and attending his children’s school events,” his obituary read.
