The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Folajinmi Oyekunle, has been declared the winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election held across the 12 wards on Saturday.

The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Abiodun Oluwadare of the University of Ibadan, made the declaration at the end of the collation exercise at Ikolaba High School, Ibadan.

He announced that Oyekunle polled 18,404 to beat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Adewale Olatunji, popularly known as Murphy, by a distance margin with 8,312 votes.

Oluwadare added that Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress recorded 88 votes, while Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance polled 40 votes.

He also disclosed that the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Hammed Badmus, had 18 votes.

“This is the declaration. I, Professor Abiodun Oluwadare, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2025 Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, held on the 16th day of August, 2024.

“That Folajinmi Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the election,” he said.

With this victory, Oyekunle will officially replace the late lawmaker, Musiliu Akinremi, popularly known as Jagaban, whose death created the vacancy and necessitated the by-election.

The outcome has been hailed as a significant milestone for the PDP, marking the party’s successful reclamation of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat for the first time since 2011
