Influencer Hannah Grubbs is facing backlash over her “out of touch” and “shameful” posts about Hurricane Melissa.
As you’re likely aware, the storm — which was initially classed as a Category 5 hurricane — made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, with wind speeds reaching up to 185 mph. Though it’s now been downgraded to a Category 3, the winds are reportedly still reaching up to 120 mph, and it is officially the strongest-ever storm on record to hit the Caribbean island. It has since made landfall in Cuba, where 735,000 people have been evacuated.

As expected, civilians were urged (and, in some particularly vulnerable areas, even forced) to evacuate, with the National Hurricane Center eerily issuing a warning that said: “LAST CHANCE TO PROTECT YOUR LIFE.”
In spite of the numerous warnings about the catastrophic storm, Hannah — who goes by @hannahhgrace21 on TikTok — has documented herself willingly flying to Jamaica and “pretending” that the hurricane wasn’t happening.
Per numerous outlets, including the Independent, Hannah shared a since-deleted video of herself and a friend strutting through an airport, which she purportedly captioned, “Us on our way to Jamaica during a hurricane.” This video is no longer available on Hannah’s page, though there is a video of the pair walking through the airport with the text, “hate to leave my house but love to leave the country.”

Hannah’s post immediately sparked backlash, with one user writing, “This has got to be the most out of touch thing I’ve witnessed by civilians in … I don’t know how long?…Hoping the people forced to babysit you through it remain safe.” Someone else commented, “‘how can i make this about me?’”
According to People, Hannah also posted — and has since deleted — a video that was captioned, “Hurricane Melissa out here messing with my vacation.”
However, Hannah has since shared a bunch more divisive videos, including one of herself ordering drinks at an outdoor bar, which she captioned, “pretending there’s not a category 5 hurricane hitting Jamaica.”

“Bragging that the people of Jamaica are serving you instead of with their families,” one comment read, while another person simply wrote, “This is shameful.”
Hannah later began sharing several “update” videos — one of which was captioned, “the calm before the storm” — as well as footage of her room door being taped by a staff member at her resort.
In her more recent videos, Hannah admitted that she was “really scared” ahead of the storm hitting, and thanked the resort staff for keeping her “prepared, protected and safe.”

Needless to say, Hannah’s posts have continued to spark immense scrutiny. “So you’re getting resources they could’ve given to people who didn’t have the choice to leave,” one comment read, while someone else said, “How are the locals doing? You know, the people who didn’t have a choice to be there, who cannot fly away after, who aren’t using this emergency for clicks.”
