Ex-presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing protests by retired members of the Nigeria Police Force, describing their plight under a poor pension scheme as “deeply regrettable” and deserving of urgent national attention.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Obi lamented the neglect faced by those who had once risked their lives to protect the country.
“These are men and women who dedicated their lives to protecting our nation, often at great personal risk,” he said.
He noted that at a time when Nigeria is facing serious security challenges, the abandonment of retired security personnel sends the wrong message to those still in service.
“It is both demoralising and unjust for those who once served on the frontlines to be abandoned in retirement. How we treat our retired security personnel speaks volumes about how we value those currently serving,” Obi stated.
Calling for immediate intervention, he urged the government to implement a comprehensive and dignified pension scheme that reflects the sacrifices made by police retirees.
“Doing so is not only a moral obligation, but it is also a step toward boosting the morale and commitment of those still in active service,” he added.
Obi concluded by emphasising that no nation can achieve sustainable peace without first caring for its protectors.
“We must show compassion and care for those who once protected our nation, so that we will not risk losing the trust and commitment of those still in uniform,” he said.
