Police Arrest Numerous Chicago ICE Protesters After Tense Clashes

Police clashed with protesters outside of a Chicago ICE facility on Friday with numerous people being arrested and riot police being called in.

Fox News correspondent Garrett Tenney reported live from the scene of the protest outside the Broadview ICE facility. The demonstration brought out a couple hundred people and Tenney said approximately half a dozen were arrested before noon. The protesters clashed with police after some moved into the street and began blocking access to the facility. Police and protesters can be seen shoving back and forth as the demonstrators locked arms to block street access.

Fox News’ Harris Faulkner cut to the “wild scene” on Friday where Tenney reported tensions were running high and increasing.

“You know on Fridays this gets hot,” Faulkner commented.

Tenney reported:

We probably have at least a half dozen or so people that were arrested just in the last few minutes. And this is the regular Friday protest that we have here outside the Broadview ICE processing facility. A couple hundred people are here and what happened in the last 10 or 15 minutes, this roadway right here that leads to the ICE facility, it is blocked off. They are not supposed to be standing there, but over 10 minutes or so ago, this crowd started to move into the street to try to block it off from any access going in or out. And that’s when these clashes with law enforcement started, when they refused to get out to the sides of the street, these designated protest zones, and some shoving that was involved with the county sheriffs as well as state police that are out here, as well Broadview police. You can see down here now, riot police coming down the road. And this is after a couple of weeks of mostly calm out here on Fridays.

Tenney noted the protesters likely feel more “empowered” after a ruling by a judge ordering the facility to improve its conditions. Detainees alleged they were not given access to phones, showers, not supplied adequate water and food, and forced to sleep on concrete.

Last week, a federal judge said the facility must improve conditions as detainees “have suffered, and are likely to suffer, irreparable harm.”
