The Kano State Police Command has issued a strong warning against the operation of tricycles by underage riders and the increasing disregard for traffic lights by motorists in the state.
The Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement on Monday, said the command was alarmed by the “dangerous riding” of tricycles — popularly called Keke Napep or Adaidaita Sahu — by minors, which has caused 16 serious road accidents in August alone, resulting in injuries and property damage.
The command also expressed concern over what it called the “flagrant disobedience” to traffic lights and other road regulations, describing the trend as a major cause of traffic jams and avoidable crashes within the Kano metropolis.
“Riding of tricycles by underage persons is prohibited and poses a significant danger to the riders and other road users. Parents and guardians are strongly advised to stop allowing their underage children to operate tricycles, as violators will face severe penalties,” the statement read in part.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, urged motorists to obey all traffic rules, warning that defaulters would be arrested and prosecuted.
He said enforcement teams had been deployed across the state to clamp down on offenders.
“The command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property in Kano State,” Bakori added.
