The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria has said it is working closely with security agencies to tackle criminal activities on the nation’s highways.

According to the association, transporters and unionists are cooperating with security operatives to ensure that criminals are apprehended, noting that there has been “a lot of improvement than what was obtainable before.”

“I can assure you, there is safety for passengers travelling by road. There is improvement from where we are coming from,” RTEAN General Secretary Yusuf Ibrahim stated in a statement on Friday.

Highlighting the progress made under the current government, the association added, “Today, almost all forms of insecurity on our roads have been taken care of. The present administration is trying and is doing everything, and machinery for the safety of travellers. And we, the motorists, the transporters, we understand that as of today, our roads are safe, although it may not be 100 per cent.”

On the collaboration with security agencies, Ibrahim said, “We, the transporters, the unionists, we are also cooperating with the security agencies to ensure that all these bad people are trapped. And now, the security agencies are after them.”

Speaking on the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas, RTEAN said it was working to ensure availability across the country. “We are trying to see that everywhere in Nigeria, you can get your CNG. Most especially, in our major cities, we want to make sure it’s obtainable. And the advantages are there. So, at least if you have CNG, there is a reduction in transport prices.”

This development comes at a critical time, as many passengers have been forced to return to road travel following the suspension of some train services, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor.

The train route, once a safer alternative for travelers avoiding highway attacks, was halted after security concerns and vandalism incidents. Investigations into a recent derailment near Asham station on August 27, 2025, are still underway.
