Newport’s historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, the only intact wooden lighthouse on the Oregon Coast, is about to be reunited with its lantern.

Construction crews will use a crane to return the approximately 11,000-pound lantern to the top of the historic lighthouse on Aug. 11.

The lantern was removed earlier this year as part of a $1.8 million exterior restoration that included repairs to multiple parts of the structure. A new roof and exterior repaint were also completed to protect the more than 150-year-old lighthouse.

The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse lantern was removed for restoration earlier this year.

Built in 1871, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is Oregon’s last example of a combined lighthouse and living quarters.

Crews plan to lift the lantern around 11 a.m. on Aug. 11. The event is expected to take about an hour.

Interested attendees can email or call OPRD Public Information Officer Stefanie Knowlton at 971-803-0154 or Stefanie.Knowlton@OPRD.oregon.gov to RSVP.

The lighthouse, at the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Area, will reopen to the public at the end of August when restoration is complete.
