A fresh political storm is brewing within the Sokoto State chapter of the All Progressives Congress as members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change accuse the party of sidelining them in its affairs.
The CPC bloc, led by Ibrahim Gusau, alleged that despite forming the majority of APC members in the state, they have been systematically marginalised and excluded from key appointments and decision-making processes.
Addressing a reunion meeting of CPC members across the 23 local government areas of the state on Saturday in Sokoto, Gusau reminded the gathering of promises allegedly made to them by former President Muhammadu Buhari after his 2025 election victory.
He said they were assured of ministerial positions, special assistant slots, and chairmanship of federal boards, but none of those commitments were fulfilled.
“We played a crucial role in the formation and victory of the APC, yet our contributions are being ignored. If these grievances remain unaddressed, we may be forced to explore alternative political platforms ahead of 2027,” Gusau warned.
The development has heightened tension in Sokoto APC, raising fears of a potential implosion that could weaken the party’s chances in the fast-approaching 2027 general elections.
Observers note that the crisis is not unique to Sokoto, as CPC loyalists in other northern states have also expressed feelings of exclusion since President Bola Tinubu’s emergence, which has seen the ACN bloc tighten its grip on party structures nationwide.
The situation in Sokoto is further compounded by the lingering supremacy battle between Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Senator Ibrahim Lamido, which has divided the party into two rival factions.
Political watchers warn that if the crisis is left unresolved, the APC risks losing a critical stronghold in the North-West zone.
Stakeholders are now calling on the party’s national chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yildwata, and the APC national secretariat to intervene swiftly to pacify aggrieved members and restore peace.
With 2027 drawing closer, the fate of APC in Sokoto hangs in the balance. The question remains: will the party’s leadership resolve the simmering crisis, or will the CPC bloc’s grievances tear apart its northern base?
